Why a House?

The Old House

4 to a room doesn’t leave space for storage or play! 7 loads of laundry a day and no room for it all! The Murphy’s need a playground for 18!

The Murphy’s are third owners of a 45 year old house with approximately 4,000 square feet of living space. As they continued adopting special needs children, the need to provide additional bedrooms and bathrooms increased. Throughout the years, the Murphys have renovated the house multiple times to add additional bedrooms, bathrooms, and other living space.

Besides living space, the Murphys are crammed for organizational space. Currently, seven boys share one closet and 10 girls share 2 closets, which makes for a hectic morning routine! The home is also in need of a space for teaching because the children are home schooled. The kitchen and laundry room are sized to accommodate a normal size family and have not been remodeled since they moved into the house over 17 years ago: Can you imagine cooking 3 meals a day for 21 people with one oven and one stove!

In addition to needing more space, the Murphy’s current home has structural issues: smoke-damaged walls and ceiling, damaged plumbing fixtures, severely damaged suspended ceiling tile in the basement. One of the greatest concerns is that the structural integrity of the house is compromised due to either age and/or improper framing of the basement.

ABC’S Extreme Makeover: Home Edition show passed the Murphy’s home over because their family was too big! With your help and the help of others, we can provide them with an even greater makeover.
